What Is Psychiatry?

Psychiatry is a medical specialty dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. Unlike counseling or therapy alone, it integrates medical principles through a biopsychosocial lens, drawing on neurobiology, psychology, pharmacology, and physical health to develop a thoughtful and personalized treatment approach.

At Transitions Counseling, psychiatric care is delivered by a team of skilled professionals. Each provider holds advanced training in psychiatric evaluation, differential diagnosis, and safe medication prescribing—working collaboratively to guide each patient’s individualized treatment plan

Our Assessment Process

Your psychiatric evaluation begins with a comprehensive clinical interview—including your mental health history, symptom review, and functioning.

A formal mental status examination is conducted to assess mood, behavior, cognition, insight, and more. When appropriate, lab tests or screening tools may be used to support diagnosis and rule out underlying medical factors.

Our Psychiatry Services

Psychiatric Evaluations

Your initial appointment includes a full diagnostic assessment—clinical interview, mental status exam, and history review—to develop an accurate diagnosis and customized treatment plan. Family or caregivers may be involved to provide additional context as needed.

Medication Management

Ongoing care includes regular follow-ups to monitor symptoms, adjust dosage, and assess side effects. We coordinate closely with therapists and counselors for an integrated treatment approach that supports your overall well-being.

Therapy Integration & Collaboration

While psychiatry focuses on medical care, therapy services—such as CBT, DBT, or EMDR —are offered within the same clinical team at Transitions. Seamless collaboration ensures your medication plan and therapy sessions align with your personal goals and progress over time.

Conditions We Treat

We provide psychiatric care for a broad range of mental health concerns across all age groups, including, but not limited to:

  • Anxiety, depression, PTSD, trauma, self‑harm
  • School-related stress, bullying, self-esteem issues
  • Adolescent and emerging adult challenges including adjustment disorders
  • ADHD, behavioral health concerns, relationship difficulties
  • Veteran-related mental health needs and family-focused support

Why Psychiatry Matters

As licensed medical professionals, our psychiatric team can:

  • Provide comprehensive diagnostic assessments grounded in standards like the DSM‑5 or ICD
  • Prescribe psychiatric medications when appropriate and monitor their effects over time
  • Order lab testing or coordinate with your primary care provider when a medication may interact with physical health conditions, ensuring safety and effectiveness

Psychiatry isn’t just about medication. It’s about integrating medical care with thoughtful collaboration and clear communication, empowering you to build a stable foundation for mental health and well-being.

Telepsychiatry and Virtual Care

We offer HIPAA-compliant telepsychiatry to make psychiatric care accessible and convenient—regardless of your schedule or location. Patients can attend evaluations or medication management sessions from home via secure video or phone. Prescriptions can be sent directly to your preferred pharmacy—offering flexibility and continuity.

Flexible, Patient-Focused Access

  • Attend secure video or phone appointments from home, eliminating the need for travel, childcare arrangements, or time off work.
  • Sessions are offered for both psychiatric evaluations (approximately 60 minutes) and medication management follow-ups.
  • We prioritize patient preference, allowing you to choose between video or phone format for greater comfort and flexibility

Appointment Process & How to Start

We make beginning psychiatric care streamlined and client-focused—because we know that timely access matters. Our goal is to connect you with expert care quickly, often scheduling your first appointment within five days or less from the moment you reach out.

Step 1: Contact Us

You can easily schedule your appointment online or call our team at (602) 363‑0629. We’ll reach back via call, email, or text typically within 24 hours to confirm and walk you through the next steps if anything is needed.

Step 2: Intake via Our Secure Patient Portal (Opus)

After your appointment is confirmed, you’ll receive an invitation to our Opus patient portal, where you can register and complete your intake forms including consent, health history, and insurance details—at your own pace prior to your first session. The portal also enables telehealth access, future appointment scheduling, and billing visibility.

Step 3: Initial Evaluation (≈ 60 minutes)

Your first appointment is a thoughtful, comprehensive intake with a psychiatric provider. This includes a detailed clinical interview, symptom review, mental status examination, and developing a personalized treatment plan based on your goals and history.

Step 4: Follow-Up Visits

Once your treatment begins, follow-up visits are scheduled regularly, typically shorter than the initial session and focus on medication management, monitoring progress, assessing side effects, and adjusting care as needed. Your provider will work closely with your therapist if you receive therapy services, making care cohesive and coordinated.
